UEFA Group Four Qualifying Round 13 October 2005
IRELAND 2 - FAROES 0
Report from Irish fan Mary McGuire
I send greetings from a very cold, wet and blustery Dublin. The result for the
Republic of Ireland was a good one - not great - but good. The atmosphere in
the Lansdowne Stadium was fantastic. We had a capacity crowd of 36,500 and the
weather on the night was wonderful. Ireland got off to a fantastic start.
The pace of the game was fast and we played a short pass game which resulted in
two very good goals from Robbie Keane - who by the way is now the all time top
scorer for the Repubic of Ireland. Try as he could, a hat trick was not to be
his on the night. Roy Keane played a masterful first half - he was voted man
of the match. He controlled the midfield and kept things under contro.
Unfortunately for the Faroe Islands, Damien Duff bested the defenders time
after time.
The second half was less eventful for the Republic. On the occasions that the
Faroe Islands put pressure on the Irish goal, Shay Given was pressed into action
and luckily for us, particularly on two occasions, he was on the ball. The
result was in our favour but I don't think Brian Kerr was too impressed with the
teams second half performance.
Apre match - the Faroe Islands came into their own. You are a most
wonderful people (second of course to the Irish fans). The pubs were full
and the craic was mighty. I heard RTE radio this morning sing the praises of
your fans and I think the comment that summed it up for me was that the West
side of the River Liffey in Dublin had not seen an invasion of friendlier
Vikings since Brian Boru.
