UEFA Group Four Qualifying Round 13 October 2005
IRELAND 2 - FAROES 0
Report from Irish fan John Reynolds
It was a tough game. We started brightly and got an early
breakthrough with the penalty after Damien Duff was brought down. When we
got a second goal after half an hour, Ireland were looking very good and we all
expected to score 4 or 5. But your side fought hard and defended well, with lots
of men behind the ball. A few heavy tackles went in and a couple of your players
were booked, but there was nothing nasty. Ireland had lots of chances, but your
keeper Mikkelsen played very well and what he didn't save, we put wide or over
the bar. Ireland had abut 15 corners but got nothing out of any of them. In the
last 10 minutes or so the Faroes had a couple of attacks and Frodi Benjaminsen
almost scored with a shot our goalkeeper saved.
The Faroese fans were great at the game and in the bars. There weren't many of
you but you made a great impression - some of the fans were on our national
radio - they were all drinking Guinness. We're looking forward to visiting the
Faroes next June. Not sure how many Irish will travel, but there'll probably be
more than you expect - we had 40,000 in Paris! It should be good fun. ... the Irish are great travellers and love to mix with local people
and fans. We like to be friendly, drink a few beers and sing a few songs.
