The Icelandic Volcano eruption and the Faroe Islands

The Faroes is Iceland's nearest neighbour in the path of the ash from the erupting volcano. All flights were grounded. Health risks were assessed.

On the front page of one of the main newspapers at the weekend there was a thought provoking bit of news next to a photo of the Faroese Chief Medical Officer.

He is standing holding a vacuum cleaner and says something to the effect that they have no equipment in the country to measure how much ash is in the air so he has had to use a Miele vacuum cleaner!

"Fortunately" it has been cold and wet with rain and snow these past few days so hopefully the ash has been dampened down.
Faroes (Faeroes) is a small Nordic land made up of 18 islands that lie between Iceland and Scotland in the subarctic region of the North Atlantic. It is part of Europe although not a member of the EU, has its own language, culture and flag, a population of about 48,000 people, 70,000 sheep and millions of seabirds, a large number of which are puffins.
